Water ecosystem is an important factor determining regional social and economic development. It is an irreplaceable natural resource for human survival, productivity and development. This study takes the TOPSIS method to identify high weight indicators and measure the closeness of the evaluation objects, and tries to use it as a reference to further classify the water resources carrying capacity of the research objects into superior and inferior levels by the Adversarial Interpretative Structural Model (AISM), with 11 provinces in the Yangtze River Economic Belt as the study area. The findings reveal that the regional water resources carrying capacity is influenced by GDP per capita, the proportion of tertiary industry, ecological water consumption rate, and urbanization rate. Zhejiang and Shanghai have a high water carrying capacity, while Guizhou, Jiangxi and Hubei provinces rank low. The TOPSIS-AISM model outperforms the traditional TOPSIS model and can be applied to similar comprehensive evaluations.
